Sons of Horus

“Metal, sea green metal, edged with bronze and covered with red slit eyes.
Some had dried blood flaking from their armour. There were heads hanging
on chains and by bunches of hair. They reeked of iron and blood. They said
to come with them. Only one Person asked why. I wish I could remember her
name, but at the time I just wanted her to be quiet. One of them walked over
to her and pulled her arms from her body, and left her screaming on the floor.
We went with them after that.”

The Sons of Horus were my first choice for the Horus Heresy. It has been a tough decision though. Most of the Legions are awesome! But well, one has to choose sooner or later. I went for the colour scheme the XVI Legion is known for and did not include any specific trophies of other Legions. So you could imagine them in several situations such as the bad guys ready to conquer Terra, the last loyal Marines shoulder to shoulder with Loken, or maybe even in the short period, when the Legion just changed their name and colour and was still (supposedly) loyal to the Emperor.

At this point I am collecting my own 31st company of the Sons of Horus. It should mirror all the struggle the Legion went through as Horus made his fateful decision. As the company is growing I am here and there including parts of the first company as support. Maybe some of them will even have to be part of Loken’s 10th company if a special scenario requires loyal marines.

Fantastic looking minis! I am about to start painting my own Sons of Horus and would love to know which paints you used. Very inspiring stuff! Cheers.

  2. All your stuff looks great. I went and picked up some mkIII armor and cataphracti after seeing your SOH.

I’ve picked up the two green paints too. Any more details on how you did the armor? The Kabalite green seems so dark? I like the syrabite. Did you use a mix for the base color?

Thanks for your inspiration and help

    • Hey Brandon, thanks a lot! The base colour really is kabalite green but when I am done you won’t see much left of it. The whole process is a colour gradient though. Just have a look at the Dreadnought’s leg here. The lowest part of the kneecap is pure unmixed “kabalite green”. I am working up my way up to the top of the kneecap by blending in small amounts of “sybarite green” in layers. I think the last layer is a mix of 30/70 (kabalite/sybarite) on top. But that always varies with the available space I got. The final highlight is pure unmixed “sybarite green” again.
