Horus Heresy Kill Team Event 2016 – Battle Report
Once again we met in Fledermaus’ holy halls of figurines (a.k.a. “ze Püppchen-Imperium”) for a Kill Team Event. This time we did play with slightly larger teams of 300p each in the times of heresy. In the end there were five different player and kill teams present.
World Eaters – by Fledermaus
- 20 tactical marines including a sergeant with power sword.
Word Bearers Gal Vorbak – by Broncofish
- 7 Gal Vorbak with a Dark Matyr in Artificer Armour with Power Axe. One of the Gal Vorbak carried a Plasma Gun.
Sons of Horus Reaver Attack Squad – by Goatmörser
- 7 Reavers with Jump Pack and a variety of Power Weapons.
Nightlords – by Kjeld
- 5 Terror Squad, one with flamer and
- 5 Night Raptors, with a nostroman chain glaive
Emperors Children – by Elrond
- 5 Palantine Blades and
- 5 Veterans with the Sniper special rule.
And last but not least:
Battle 1 – Word Bearers vs. Night Lords
First game of the day against the fearsome Night Lords of Kjeld.
Battle 2 – Word Bearers vs. Emperors Children
The second game of the days was against Elrond’s Emperor’s Children. A fine elite troupe with the beautiful Palantine Blades and some Legion Veterans.
The second game was fun but a bit one sided… the Gal Vorbak just killed everything and even though I was a bit scared of the Palantine Blades they have been no match against the big reds.
Battle 3 – Word Bearers vs. Sons of Horus
The most feared battle: lightning quick team, loads of Power Weapons and the only Plasma Gun in an enemy team… Goatmörser really equipped his Reavers well and they were literally armed to the teeth. Lets see how it worked out:
This battle went quite unexpected. I presumed that the Reaver’s Power Weapons would make quick work of the Gal Vorbak, since their Power Armour would be useless… but I could not have been more wrong. The high toughness and some luck with the deamonic saves resulted in only one Gal Vorbak getting killed. Also the high initiative of the possessed really paid off: often killing their opponents before they could even strike. Thanks to Goatmörser and his beautiful Reavers.
Battle 4 – Word Bearers vs. World Eaters
The World Eaters were the only team that outnumbered my team in the number of wounds. Also they were all Legionaries and a lot of them… so I was prepared to face thousands of Bolter shells flying my way.
I knew this would be a tough game of attrition warfare. By the sheer body count this game was as bloody as game 2 & 3 together. Both sides waded through puddles of blood towards the end and the World Eaters have been most successful in killing the Gal Vorbak. The sheer number of hits and wounds made it difficult to save all of them. Especially the “Fury of the Legion” asked for a bloody toll. But in the end it was obvious who was truly favoured by the gods… 😉
First of all a huge thank you for the fine afternoon / evening to my fellow club members. As a casual gamer (and I am in the best company) these small games are really the nice flavour of the hobby. Lots of games against the other club members in one afternoon. Nice.
Regarding the Gal Vorbak I have to admit that I totally underestimated their performance. I expected them to be not too bad, but I didn’t expect a massacre like this. In four games I lost 4 men… 2 of them against the massed fire power of the World Eaters (creating just an insane number of hits is a good remedy against these red nightmares…). I must say, I was lucky against some wounds inflicted by power weapons (the deamonic save is helpful even if it is just a 5+) but the overall combination of T5 and 2 wounds in a Power Armour makes the lads quite durable. Also the very high initiative and the rending attacks make them extremely powerful during assaults.
The Dark Martyr is probably the toughest little shit one can probably field in an event like this. 3 wounds, T5, 2+/5++ save and a number of attacks and special rules… This is a really strong character on paper and he proved to be so on the battle field as well. Basically the guy was in the mids of melee in every game and single handedly killed quite a number of opponents while losing only two wounds in all four games. I am really curious about the performance of the Dark Martyr in future bigger games.
All in all the Gal Vorbak are an infantry solution to an infantry problem and they solve that problem in no time… Looking forward to the next event in a few weeks. Stay tuned.
