Characters of the XVIth Legion

The recently finished Sons of Horus Terminators gave me the motivation to work a bit more on the XVIth Legion. For the last missions of the Betrayal at Calth board game I am in need of yet another Legion Veteran Sergeant. So I sat down and came up with a miniature made from no less than 7 different GW / FW kits. While chosing a name for the new Sergeant (a tradition I kept from the very beginning of this project) I thought that it would be a good idea to look back on all the named characters I painted for the Sons of Horus so far. ...

Sons of Horus Cataphractii squad

While visiting the local GW some days ago I noticed a test match of the new Shadespire game. Suddenly it came to my mind (looking at the hex-fields on the board) that I really would like to go on with Flattevieh’s and my own little campaign playing the Betrayal at Calth or better said Betrayal at Isstvan III board game. For the next mission there were only two Terminators lacking paint which stood around here readily assembled for quite some time now. So I didn’t hesitate and painted both of them. Hopefully Flattervieh’s World Eater Terminators won’t take long for him to finish. ...

Cthonian Colossus

The most recent addition for my Sons of Horus is my very own version of Captain Steloc Aethon of the Betrayal at Calth board game. As he will be on the loyalist side when I am playing Betrayal at Calth / Isstvan III I imagine him to be one of the very last comrades of Garviel Loken. He shall henceforth be known as Centurion Xalus Seraddon, one of the last Luna Wolves. Although I might very well use him in regular games as a traitor on the Warmaster’s side. ...

Heavy Bolter Fire

Regarding my Sons of Horus I am right now busy with my Reaver Attack Squad yet I am still keeping an eye on the Betrayal at Calth missions I would like to play as soon as possible. While Heavy Bolters tend to be not so exciting in regular matches (especially when everybody wears at least a power armour) they are really great in the Betrayal at Calth game. That’s why I had to come up with a little upgrade for my Legion Veteran Squad. ...

Sea green Behemoths

The Terminator Sergeant Raban Sarr of the 31st company of the Sons of Horus and a comrade in arms got finished and are ready now for the upcoming Betrayal at Calth / Isstvan III matches. At least this is what I thought until I saw the pictures of the recent Horus Heresy Weekender. The plastic Cataphractii Pattern Terminators will get some shoulder pad upgrades and the Sons of Horus are among the first Legions to receive this nice treatment. Well … they don’t look to different from the ones I casted from my Justaerin shoulders. But it’s a little bit in the vein of Malibu Stacy’s new hat. I WANT IT! So I am going to ...

White Scars Veteran Brotherhood

Also I got (even though I am a bit late with my first results) the “Betrayal at Calth” box and of course panted the loyalist up as White Scars in order to match the rest of my collection. I ordered my box at a small online shop not far from my place and its definately worth a visit (click here) for they have fantastic prices. The upgrade sets I ordered from Forgeworld when they had been released last year and to be quite honest I ordered quite some clam packs, just to be safe for possible inspiration. So when the box eventually arrived I could start right away, building and painting up the veterans. For the Terminators as well as ...

Betrayal at Isstvan III

I played the first mission of the new “Betrayal at Calth” at my local Games Workshop a couple of days ago. Now Flattervieh tested the board game for the first time aswell. We decided to place our own take of the included campaign at Isstvan III thus giving our World Eaters and Sons of Horus a fitting place to cross their chainswords. In fact there are several parallels to be found. The virus bombing of Isstvan III and the collapsing star of Calth both had a pretty severe effect on the planets’ surface thus making underground fighting likely. Another very appealing sidenote is that we will always play the missions on both sides. When the Sons of Horus ...

Ironclad

I have to say that the plastic Cataphractii pattern Terminators are just as pleasing as the plastic Marines in Power Armour. GW did a marvelous job here. Yet I have to point out that it is (in my opinion) utterly important to give them a little twist to make sure that their universal look gets a bit modified towards their Legion’s look. That’s why I did not glue the little shield on my Terminators. I think that looks more like Imperial Fists or something in that vein. Then I attached a chain blade to the Storm Bolter to copy the look of the Justaerins’ weapons. Also I made a resin copy (my first try by the way) of ...

Veterans of Isstvan III

Now that the plastic Marines are among the Horus Heresy miniatures range I was curious to test how they would fit in. All told I am mostly satisfied I have to say. One can notice only a slight difference as the plastic legs are a bit more massive than the resin ones. But since I mix different power armour marks I don’t mind small distinctions within the Marines’ ranks at all. Actually I think it supports the heterogenous look which I appreciate. Considering Veterans I’ve always prefered two different ways to create them. One being the experienced, war-torn Space Marine mostly looking like a regular Marine but with more equipment or other slight modifications that let’s him clearly ...

Serghar Targost

As the info regarding the new Horus Heresy box set got more and more concrete it came as no surprise that most of the Aleatores would buy one (some even two). My goal is to use all the Marines included for my ever-growing Sons of Horus army exclusively. Yet I would like to give the actual game in the box a try aswell. So Flattervieh and me came to an agreement. We would both paint the whole box content as both Sons of Horus and World Eaters thus making it possible for us to play both sides. So you could call our matches “Betrayal at Isstvan III” as my Sons of Horus will go as traitors hunting loyal ...
